Discipline v. Punishment

Discipline comes from the same Latin root as does the word disciple, meaning to empower, to honor, to follow with admiration; to empower through respect and responsiveness.
Punishment generally involves the opposite.  The result of punishment involves these 3 R's:
1 -- Rebellion
2 -- Resistance
3 -- Reprisal

The Authoritative Disciplinarian
A parent is demonstrating Authoritative Discipline when he/she sets standards clearly, discusses the significance of it, delegates the responsibilities to the individuals involved, and is available to discuss (work with) any problems the child comes to; but stands firmly on the elements of the origional agreement.
BE FIRM, BUT WITH DIGNITY AND RESPECT!
